There is more than one possible path to get from the start to the finish. All of the different possibilities follow the same path in some parts of the solution, and follow a wide web of various paths in other parts of the solution. There are two main sections where the solution path branches out and then converges back to a single path: one section at the very beginning, another about halfway through. Below is an abbreviated solution space - only the paths leading more or less toward a solution are shown. There are other segments of paths which eventually lead to the finish, but I got tired of hunting down more and more tangential solutions.
I came up with this type of puzzle after seeing an example of a puzzle which used the chess knight movement. That puzzle had a full eight by eight chess board as the center "island" finish, and the start along the edge of the puzzle. I'm not sure exactly when I created this puzzle, but I submitted it during the summer of 1993 in my first group of puzzles given over to the editors of "Imagine".
