detailed solution

My mom gave two clues that specifically ordered some of the trees. Let’s look at those first.

  1. I want to finish the tree with the blue and white lights before the tree in the kitchen, but after the tree decorated with colored balls.

This means the tree with colored balls must be finished first or second, the tree with blue and white lights second or third, and the tree in the kitchen third or fourth. It also means the tree with colored balls, the tree with blue and white lights, and the tree in the kitchen are all different trees.

Christmas Trees Solution Grid A

  1. I want to finish the tree decorated with glass ornaments before the tree with red and white lights, but after the tree in the entryway.

Similar to the last clue, this means the tree in the entryway must be finished first or second, the tree with glass ornaments second or third, and the tree with red and white lights third or fourth. It also means the tree in the entryway, the tree with glass ornaments, and the tree with red and white lights are all different trees.

Christmas Trees Solution Grid B

The next clue we’ll examine has two parts. Let’s take them separately.

  1. I won’t decorate the tree with icicles last.

We already know that trees with colored balls and glass ornaments won’t be decorated last, and now we can add the tree with icicles. This leaves the tree with ornaments of natural materials – that must be the last to be decorated. We’ve also already established that the tree with blue and white lights and the tree in the entryway (which could be the same tree) won’t be decorated last, so those won’t have ornaments of natural materials.

Christmas Trees Solution Grid C

  1. The tree with the colored balls won’t be in the entryway.

Again, we already knew the tree with glass ornaments won’t be in the entryway, and the first part of this clue added the tree with ornaments of natural materials. The second part of this clue adds colored balls, which leaves the tree with icicles to be in the entryway. Since the entryway tree won’t have red and white lights or be decorated third, we now know the tree with icicles won’t have red and white lights or be decorated third either. This leaves the tree with glass ornaments to be decorated third.

Christmas Trees Solution Grid D

  1. The tree in the living room will have lights with mixed colors, but it won’t be the tree with glass ornaments.

With this clue, we can first add to the grid what is stated. Since the living room tree (which has lights of mixed colors) will not be decorated with icicles or with glass ornaments, then we know that those ornaments will not be on the tree with lights of mixed colors.

Christmas Trees Solution Grid E

The last clue must determine everything else, but we’ll take those conclusions one step at a time.

  1. The tree in the dining room will only have white lights.

With white lights being on the tree in the dining room, we can also determine that the entryway tree has blue and white lights and the kitchen tree has red and white lights.

Christmas Trees Solution Grid F

Since we already know the entryway tree has icicles, and the entryway tree has blue and white lights, then the tree with icicles must also have blue & white lights. This means the tree with glass ornaments must also have white lights.

Christmas Trees Solution Grid G

Since we already know the dining room tree has white lights, this must mean the dining room tree is the one with glass ornaments. This also means that the living room tree must have colored balls, and the kitchen tree must have ornaments of natural materials. Given that information, we can now also match mixed colored lights with colored balls, and red and white lights with ornaments of natural materials.

Christmas Trees Solution Grid H

We’ve already concluded that the entryway tree has icicles and blue and white lights. Earlier clues established that the entryway tree could be decorated first or second, and the tree with blue and white lights could be decorated second or third. This must mean that this tree is going to be decorated second. Then we can also conclude that the tree with colored balls will be decorated first.

Christmas Trees Solution Grid I

At this point, all of the locations, ornaments, lights, and the order has been matched. We can fill in the rest of the chart given what we already know.
